Changing money in Egypt

  • ATMs

Widely available in cities and most towns, dispensing Egyptian pounds directly at close to the interbank rate. Usually the best value — look for machines branded with a major bank (NBE, CIB, Banque Misr, QNB) to avoid excess fees from smaller operators.

  • Airport currency kiosks

Available at every international airport for exchange the moment you land — convenient, but rates and fees are typically the least favorable. Fine for a small amount to cover a taxi or tip, not ideal for exchanging most of your trip's cash.

  • Currency exchange bureaus (Forex)

Found throughout cities and tourist areas, often with rates close to or better than banks and no commission. A reasonable middle ground between an ATM and a bank counter.

  • Banks

Official rates, but usually the slowest option — expect to show your passport and wait in line. Best for larger amounts if you're not near a trusted ATM.

  • Hotels

The most convenient option and usually the weakest rate. Reasonable for a small emergency exchange, not for changing the bulk of your trip money.
